With recruitment and retention at the top of everyone’s list, the need for high-quality continuing professional development (CPD) to support teachers to stay in the profession and thrive has never been greater.  

So TDT set itself a challenge last year. 

We were curious about the extent to which school leaders felt they needed collaborative and impartial support with planning, implementing and evaluating staff development to ensure they are offering staff the very best CPD they can, within the resource constraints they have.

What we heard loud and clear was that whilst leaders know that good professional development can transform school performance, the time, energy, investment and whole school shifts needed to create lasting change are often difficult to resource.

Informed and confident leadership and decision-making around staff development matters if we are to continuously develop professionalism, retain our teachers and spark joy in teaching and learning.

However, so often, leading staff development falls to highly competent colleagues who receive little or no support and training to understand the wealth of evidence and good practice that underpins this particular area, and our best efforts fall flat. We’ve all felt the frustration of a misspent INSET day!

That’s where TDT’s new approach to supporting leaders comes in.

A new pathway to develop leadership of CPD

TDT’s charitable mission has always been to champion effective CPD leadership and support schools in creating an environment where teachers and leaders thrive. 

Based on deep research and extensive consultation, we are delighted to be launching a new website in April, with a free CPD Leadership Hub designed specifically to support leaders to work with colleagues to improve the planning, designing, implementation and evaluation of staff development.

Organised around our well-established 7 Domains of People Powered School Improvement,  you’ll find evidence-based resources  to help you develop your knowledge, skills and confidence in leading CPD, whatever that needs to look like for your school or trust including:

  • A free CPD Leadership Reflection Tool to help leaders reflect on areas of strength and weaknesses in their CPD provision
  • Low-cost Online Learning Modules to support the development of CPD Leadership
  • Affordable 1:1 coaching packages to tackle issues, plan,  implement and evaluate new approaches to leading professional growth
