Processes and Structures of CPD

Bringing all of the elements of effective CPD together requires some careful thought about systems and leadership. Time needs to be carefully allocated to support effective CPD, with change managed in a way that optimises buy-in from staff. Meetings should be strategically planned to focus on developing teaching and learning. These are most effective when they minimise administrative tasks.

In the most effective schools we visit, the leadership of teaching, learning and professional  development is distributed and all staff have the time and space to develop, with timetables creatively adapted to support this.

What does the research say?

Timperley et al’s 2007 paper reviews a number of studies on teacher development. A recurring theme across several of these studies is that CPD is most sustainable where there is infrastructure to support it. It also cites that, in order for CPD to be effective, staff need to understand that it is a key part of their role. It is the responsibility of the leader to ensure this is clearly communicated and that both ‘time and opportunity’ are afforded to staff to allow them to integrate new learning into practice.

Viviane Robinson’s 2009 research dives deeper into what makes effective leadership of teaching and learning. Setting clear, attainable goals, allocating resources appropriately, and ensuring the purpose behind any CPD plan is coherent to all staff were all identified as positive practices.
