Teacher Development Trust to become part of The Chartered College of Teaching

11/03/2026

The Teacher Development Trust (TDT) will become part of the Chartered College of Teaching this summer.

The TDT, a charity focused on improving teachers’ professional development, said that becoming part of the College would allow its research and other work to continue to have an impact. To support this, TDT will gift its assets and reserves to the professional body for teachers.

Founded in 2012, the TDT has worked with more than 10,000 school leaders on initiatives to improve teacher development. It received attention last year for its landmark survey of professional development experience of teachers and its work with sector leaders to codify the “teaching of teachers” as a distinct discipline called “didagogy”.

The Chartered College of Teaching exists to empower a knowledgeable and respected teaching profession, and is underpinned by values of commitment, collaboration and professionalism. Through membership and accreditation, the College supports the development of effective, evidence-informed teachers and leaders, and seeks to improve the quality of professional learning. At the heart of both organisations is a dedication to promoting and supporting the effective professional development of teachers and school leaders, to continually improve education for children and young people.

The College already has longstanding connections to TDT. TDT’s founder, David Monis-Weston, was a founding fellow of the college, while Dame Alison Peacock, CEO of the college, was a founding trustee of the TDT. The links between the organisations have supported a range of mission-aligned projects, including work on Didagogy and on teacher agency. Both organisations share a fundamental belief that high-quality professional development for teachers and school leaders is an urgent need. Good educational outcomes for children depend on excellent teaching, and the surest way to achieve that is through good training and professional development.

This decision will mean that teachers and school leaders will benefit from the latest ideas, evidence, and tangible advice around professional development from the Chartered College of Teaching, informed by the work that TDT has done over the last decade and more. This will protect the legacy of TDT, while giving all those working in schools better access to the research, evidence, and passion that have driven TDT since its creation.

Both TDT and The Chartered College of Teaching are committed to completing delivery of the final cohorts and re-sit assessments associated with NPQs. Teams from both organisations are collaborating closely to ensure participants enjoy a seamless transition and continue to develop their practice by engaging with outstanding provision.

Gareth Conyard, CEO at TDT:

This is an exciting opportunity to advance the cause of effective teacher and school leader professional development. TDT has been a strong supporter of the College since its inception nearly a decade ago, and am delighted its team is keen to take on the mission of TDT. Growing the impact of the TDT’s work through the Chartered College offers the profession the scale and nuance around professional development that it so richly deserves.

Dame Alison Peacock, CEO at Chartered College of Teaching:

Teacher professional learning is at the heart of our mission at the Chartered College and I am delighted that, as stewards of the TDT’s legacy, we will continue their important work. TDT has had a significant impact on the CPD landscape, supporting teachers and leaders, monitoring the quality of professional development, and challenging the thinking of policy-makers and partners. We have worked closely together for almost a decade, and by building on their vital work we will continue to empower the profession and improve education for all.

David Monis Weston, Founder of TDT and Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching:

The CPD landscape has changed so much in the last decade and the TDT journey has taken us further than we ever imagined. When TDT began, CPD was barely on the policy agenda and now it’s central to government policy and leadership frameworks. I am so pleased to now see TDT and the College coming together in this way. TDT was one of three core organisations that formed the Claim Your College coalition for the creation of the College, and this will give those who care about professional development a strong platform to advocate and achieve in the future.
