How much do schools spend on CPD in 2025? And is it having an impact?

Every year, over £1 billion is invested in teacher professional development in England, along with the countless hours that teachers and leaders spend on training sessions, coaching and informal learning, often in their own time.

…Yet the findings from our upcoming CPD Landscape report suggest that this combined investment of money, time and energy still isn’t making the difference it should. Too often, the impact of CPD hinges not on teacher effort and commitment, but on whether school leadership truly understands how to make professional learning meaningful, sustained and embedded.

Due to be released at our National Conference on the 21st of October 2025, Teacher Development: The Landscape in 2025, will offer a powerful, data-driven snapshot of the current state of teacher CPD across the country. It highlights key strengths, persistent challenges, and the opportunities we must seize to drive lasting improvement.

Just some of the pertinent questions the report will answer include:

  • Which CPD formats are perceived to have the greatest impact?
  • Could CPD play a bigger role in helping teachers stay in the profession?
  • Do teachers and leaders experience CPD in the same way?
  • What makes CPD truly effective for teachers and pupils – and is current provision delivering?
