National Thank A Teacher Day 2022 is on Thursday 26th May. TDT’s Director of Education, Gareth Conyard gives thanks to an inspirational teacher.

Mr Walker was THAT teacher for me. The one we all remember. The one that transformed the way that I thought about myself and my possible future.

I started studying history with Mr Walker in Year 10 and it suddenly shifted from a slightly dry and boring repetition of facts to something that felt relevant. He helped me to understand how the events of even hundreds of years ago helped to shape the present and present lessons for the future. And he took the enthusiasm I began to show for the subject and showed me how to apply that with precision and purpose.

If it wasn’t for Mr Walker, not only would I have not read history at university, I don’t think I would have gone to university at all.

He retired a few years ago and I was lucky enough to be able to catch-up with him and thank him personally for the difference he has made to my life.

National Thank a Teacher Day is on Thursday 26th May and is dedicated to all the schools and colleges at the heart of our communities, from the teachers helping us make sense of the world to all the wonderful support staff keeping things running.
